Boeing Completes Acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems

Boeing has officially completed its acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems, bringing one of its largest suppliers in-house and marking a major shift in the company’s commercial and defense operations. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg described the move as a pivotal moment for the manufacturer, emphasizing the focus on stability, high-quality aircraft production, and strengthened aftermarket and defense capabilities as integration begins.
The acquisition includes all Boeing-related commercial operations at Spirit AeroSystems, notably fuselage production for the 737, as well as major structures for the 767, 777, and 787 Dreamliner programs. It also covers fuselages commercially procured for the P-8 and KC-46 military aircraft. By bringing the supplier into its operations directly, Boeing also gains expanded access to spare parts, global maintenance and repair services, and Spirit’s rotable, lease, and exchange portfolio.
Spirit Defense will continue supporting its clients as an independent supplier within the industry. Operated as a non-integrated subsidiary under Boeing Defense, Space & Security, it will maintain separate governance and operations while aligning on financial reporting and select enterprise functions.
Portions of Spirit AeroSystems’ Belfast operations have also been acquired and will now operate as an independent subsidiary under the historic Short Brothers name. Meanwhile, commercial and aftermarket sites in Wichita, Dallas, Tulsa, and Prestwick will begin integrating into Boeing, adding approximately 15,000 workers to the company.
Leaders across Kansas welcomed the acquisition, highlighting the state’s long-standing role in global aviation manufacturing. Officials noted the significance of Boeing’s expanded presence in Wichita, reinforcing the region’s status as the Air Capital of the World and positioning it for continued aerospace innovation and investment.
