Finnair Fights €7.6m Fine as It Issues $350m in New Notes

Finnair plans to contest a EUR7.6 million (USD8.8 million) penalty proposed by the Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority, which alleges the carrier violated competition rules by limiting online travel agents from advertising discounted fares. The airline strongly disputes the claim, calling it a misunderstanding and emphasizing that it has maintained transparent practices with travel agencies throughout its commercial relationships.
The investigation centers on whether Finnair imposed restrictions that could have prevented OTAs from marketing or displaying promotional ticket prices. Finnair argues that its policies were compliant with applicable laws and that it intends to defend its position through the formal legal process.
Separately, Finnair has strengthened its financial position by issuing EUR300 million (USD350 million) in senior unsecured notes. The offering was completed on November 27, with the bonds debuting on the Nasdaq Helsinki exchange on December 2. The airline said the proceeds will be allocated to general corporate purposes, supporting liquidity and ongoing business operations as it continues to rebuild profitability in a challenging European market.
