Southwest Airlines to Open Austin Crew Base With City Incentives

Southwest Airlines will open a new crew base at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in March, marking a significant expansion of its operations in Central Texas. The move is backed by USD5.5 million in incentives from the City of Austin and is expected to support the creation of thousands of jobs over time.
The Austin crew base will house pilots and flight attendants and is designed to strengthen Southwest’s long-term presence at the airport, which has become one of the carrier’s fastest-growing markets. The airline already operates a large domestic network from Austin, and the new base is expected to improve operational flexibility while supporting future growth.
Alongside the crew base opening, Southwest Airlines is expanding its Austin flight schedule. Beginning in March, the carrier will add new nonstop services to Fort Myers, Florida; Palm Springs, California; and Steamboat Springs, Colorado, targeting both leisure and seasonal travel demand. In June, Southwest will further expand its network with the launch of daily nonstop flights between Austin and Cincinnati.
The investment underscores Austin-Bergstrom International Airport’s rising profile as a key U.S. aviation hub, driven by strong population growth, increasing business travel, and sustained leisure demand. For Southwest Airlines, the Austin expansion aligns with its broader strategy of strengthening core markets while supporting job creation and regional economic development.
