Cleveland Hopkins Seen as Future United Airlines Hub

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport has been identified as a potential future hub for United Airlines, according to an analysis by Simple Flying, pointing to the carrier’s strong market presence and a planned USD1.6 billion terminal modernization program.
United Airlines remains Cleveland’s largest airline by passenger traffic, despite officially de-hubbing the airport in 2014 following its merger with Continental Airlines. Since then, United has maintained a sizable schedule at Cleveland Hopkins, serving key domestic markets and retaining a loyal customer base.
The airport’s planned terminal redevelopment is expected to significantly improve passenger facilities, gate efficiency, and overall airport capacity, factors that could make Cleveland more attractive for expanded hub-style operations. The investment is also aimed at enhancing connectivity and supporting long-term traffic growth.
Cleveland Hopkins’ central location in the U.S. Midwest, combined with available infrastructure and lower congestion compared with larger hubs, strengthens its appeal as an operationally efficient base. While United has not announced any formal plans to reestablish a hub at the airport, industry observers note that the airline’s sustained presence and the scale of planned airport upgrades keep Cleveland firmly in the conversation for future network expansion.
