Phoenix Sky Harbor to Launch TSA PreCheck Touchless ID Program

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is set to introduce TSA PreCheck Touchless ID in mid-February, marking another step toward faster and more seamless airport security screening. With the rollout, Phoenix joins roughly 50 airports nationwide offering the facial recognition-based system to eligible travelers.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport said the technology will be available to TSA PreCheck members at no additional cost. Touchless ID allows travelers to verify their identity using facial recognition instead of presenting a physical ID at the security checkpoint, reducing contact and speeding up the screening process.
The system works by comparing a live image of a passenger’s face with photos already on file from government-issued identification, such as a passport or driver’s license. Verification typically takes just seconds, allowing travelers to move through checkpoints more quickly while maintaining existing security standards. Participation is voluntary, and passengers who prefer not to use facial recognition can still present a physical ID as usual.
Transportation Security Administration has been expanding Touchless ID as part of its broader effort to modernize airport screening and reduce wait times. The agency says the technology improves efficiency without compromising privacy, noting that images captured during the process are not stored or used for law enforcement purposes.
Several major airlines operating at Sky Harbor are participating in the program, including American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and Alaska Airlines. Their involvement ensures that a large share of TSA PreCheck passengers traveling through Phoenix will be eligible to use the new system.
Airport officials say the addition of Touchless ID aligns with Sky Harbor’s focus on improving the passenger experience as travel demand remains strong. Phoenix is one of the busiest airports in the United States, serving tens of millions of travelers annually, and even small improvements in checkpoint efficiency can have a meaningful impact during peak periods.
For frequent travelers, the appeal is convenience. TSA PreCheck already offers expedited screening, and Touchless ID further streamlines the process by eliminating the need to fumble for documents at the checkpoint. Combined, the tools aim to reduce stress and congestion in security lines.
The rollout at Phoenix Sky Harbor reflects a broader trend across the aviation industry toward biometric solutions. Airlines and airports worldwide are increasingly adopting facial recognition for check-in, boarding and security, betting that automation can improve flow while maintaining safety.
As TSA continues to expand Touchless ID to more locations, Phoenix travelers will soon have access to one of the latest advances in airport security technology, offering a faster and more contact-free experience from curb to gate.
