Wizz Air has announced a new direct service connecting Birmingham Airport with Timișoara in western Romania, further expanding its UK network and strengthening links between the Midlands and Central and Eastern Europe. The new route is scheduled to launch on 21 May 2026 and will operate twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays.

The addition of Timișoara reflects Wizz Air’s continued focus on serving underserved city pairs while catering to both leisure and visiting friends and relatives travel. Timișoara, often referred to as the cultural and economic hub of western Romania, has seen growing demand from the Romanian diaspora in the UK, as well as increasing interest from business travelers linked to the region’s expanding manufacturing and technology sectors.

For Birmingham Airport, the new service reinforces its position as a key regional gateway offering direct access to a broad range of European destinations. The airport has been steadily rebuilding and expanding its route network, with low-cost carriers playing a central role in restoring connectivity following the pandemic. The launch of the Timișoara route adds another Eastern European destination to Birmingham’s growing portfolio.

The service will be operated using Wizz Air’s Airbus A320-family aircraft, in line with the airline’s strategy of deploying high-density, fuel-efficient narrowbodies on short- and medium-haul routes. The twice-weekly schedule is designed to provide flexibility for weekend travel while also supporting short business trips and family visits.

Wizz Air has continued to expand its presence in the UK market despite broader industry challenges, focusing on competitive fares and point-to-point routes that bypass major hubs. The airline has positioned itself as a leading carrier between the UK and Romania, already serving multiple Romanian cities from airports across the country.

The launch also comes as Wizz Air advances its wider growth strategy across Europe, which includes capacity increases, fleet expansion, and a strong emphasis on cost discipline. At the same time, the airline has highlighted sustainability as a priority, with ongoing investments in newer aircraft and operational efficiencies aimed at reducing emissions per passenger.

Tickets for the Birmingham–Timișoara service are expected to go on sale in the coming months. With Romania remaining one of the fastest-growing European travel markets, the new route is likely to appeal to a broad mix of travelers seeking affordable, direct connections between the UK and the Banat region of Romania.
