Global Tourism to China Surges for Spring Festival

International tourism to China has surged ahead of the Spring Festival holiday, with flight bookings by foreign travelers rising more than fourfold compared to the same period last year, according to the latest travel data.
Over the past two weeks, airlines have reported a sharp increase in inbound reservations tied to the Lunar New Year celebrations, traditionally one of the busiest travel seasons in China. The spike reflects growing global interest in experiencing the country’s largest annual cultural event, as well as the continued recovery of international air connectivity.
Spring Festival, which marks the beginning of the lunar calendar year, drives massive domestic migration within China, but it is increasingly attracting overseas visitors seeking cultural immersion. Major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu typically host elaborate festivities, including lantern displays, temple fairs and traditional performances, drawing tourists from across Asia, Europe and North America.
Airlines have responded to the demand surge by increasing seat capacity on key international routes and restoring frequencies that were previously reduced. Travel platforms report that inbound bookings are not limited to traditional gateway cities. Many foreign travelers are also exploring secondary destinations, combining metropolitan visits with trips to heritage sites and regional cultural hubs.
The more than 400 percent rise in foreign flight bookings signals renewed confidence in cross-border travel to China. Eased visa policies for certain countries, expanded transit visa-free programs and improved air connectivity have all contributed to the rebound.
Hotels and tourism operators are preparing for higher occupancy rates during the holiday period, particularly in cities known for iconic Spring Festival celebrations. Retail, hospitality and entertainment sectors are also expected to benefit from increased international spending.
Industry analysts view the surge as a positive indicator for China’s broader tourism recovery. While domestic travel remains the backbone of the Spring Festival season, the rapid growth in international bookings suggests that China is regaining momentum as a global destination.
As global travelers seek culturally rich experiences, the Spring Festival is emerging not only as a domestic travel peak but also as a major international tourism draw, reinforcing China’s role in the global travel landscape.
