Heathrow Raises SAF Incentive Above UK Mandate

Heathrow Airport is expanding its sustainable aviation fuel incentive program for 2026, targeting a 5.6 percent SAF uplift—around two percentage points above the United Kingdom’s mandated blending requirement.

The enhanced scheme is designed to accelerate the adoption of lower-carbon fuels by helping airlines offset the higher cost of SAF compared to conventional jet fuel. Heathrow has allocated additional funding to narrow the price gap between kerosene and sustainable alternatives, encouraging carriers operating at the airport to increase their SAF usage beyond regulatory minimums.

If the 5.6 percent target is achieved, Heathrow estimates it could cut carbon emissions by approximately 600,000 metric tons, reinforcing the airport’s decarbonization strategy. SAF is widely viewed as one of the most effective near-term tools for reducing aviation emissions, as it can be used in existing aircraft engines without significant modifications.

Heathrow has already positioned itself as a global leader in SAF adoption. As of 2024, the airport accounted for roughly 17 percent of the world’s total SAF usage, underscoring its role as a key testing ground and deployment hub for low-carbon aviation fuels. The airport now aims to increase SAF usage to 11 percent by 2030, aligning with broader UK and international climate objectives.

The UK’s SAF mandate sets minimum blending thresholds for fuel supplied at British airports, but Heathrow’s expanded incentive program goes further by financially supporting airlines willing to exceed those requirements. Airport executives argue that voluntary incentives are essential to stimulate demand while global SAF production capacity continues to scale up.

Airlines operating at Heathrow face growing pressure from regulators, investors and customers to reduce emissions. However, SAF remains significantly more expensive than traditional jet fuel, limiting widespread uptake without policy support or financial mechanisms.

By increasing its SAF incentive for 2026, Heathrow is seeking to bridge that affordability gap and demonstrate that airports can play an active role in aviation’s energy transition. The move reinforces the airport’s ambition to serve as a catalyst for sustainable aviation while supporting industry-wide efforts to decarbonize long-haul air travel.
