China Grants UK 30-Day Visa-Free Entry

China has approved 30-day visa-free entry for UK citizens, marking a significant shift in travel policy between the two countries. The announcement came during UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to China last week, with Beijing confirming that British passport holders will be allowed to enter China without a visa for stays of up to 30 days.

By the end of 2025, China had already extended its unilateral visa-free arrangements for several European countries, including France, through the end of 2026. Until now, however, the United Kingdom had not been included in China’s expanding visa-free program. British travelers were still required to apply for five- or ten-year multiple-entry visas through Chinese embassies and consulates for business, tourism, or family visits.

The new policy reflects a broader improvement in bilateral ties, with aviation recovery serving as one of the clearest indicators. In fact, the rebound in air services and passenger flows began well before the visa waiver announcement.

Between January 19 and March 23, 2026, China Southern Airlines increased frequencies on its Guangzhou–London route from one daily flight to eight weekly services. The carrier operates the route using Boeing 787-9 aircraft, underscoring strengthening long-haul demand between the two markets.

From a capacity standpoint, China–UK passenger routes have now entered a relatively stable recovery phase. During the first three quarters of 2025, nearly 12,000 direct flights operated between the two countries. Round-trip passenger traffic rose 4.0 percent year on year, while total passenger volume across 23 direct routes linking Chinese cities and the UK reached 3.03 million travelers.

Load factors have also strengthened. Major hub routes have stabilized at approximately 86 percent, while secondary hub routes averaged 70.3 percent, reflecting healthy demand across both primary and regional gateways.

The expansion in air capacity is translating into renewed tourism momentum. VisitBritain forecasts that Chinese visitor arrivals to the UK will reach 667,000 in 2026, a 28 percent increase compared with estimated 2025 levels. These visitors are expected to generate approximately £1.3 billion in tourism revenue for the UK economy.

The visa-free agreement is expected to further stimulate business travel, tourism, and cultural exchange, supporting continued growth in passenger traffic and strengthening economic ties between China and the United Kingdom.
