Delta Flight Diverted to Anchorage After Passenger Threats

A Delta Air Lines flight bound for Taiwan was forced to divert to Anchorage after a midair disturbance involving an unruly passenger escalated into a serious safety concern, according to federal authorities.

The incident occurred on March 14 aboard Delta Flight 69, which departed Seattle en route to Taiwan. While flying over the Pacific Ocean, a confrontation between a passenger and flight attendants intensified, prompting the crew to initiate security protocols and ultimately divert the aircraft to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.

According to an FBI affidavit, the passenger allegedly grabbed a flight attendant’s shoulder, used racial slurs, and made threats during the altercation. The situation escalated near a galley area after a disagreement over access to a lavatory. Investigators said tensions continued even after the passenger used the restroom, with verbal abuse and threats reported by multiple crew members.

As the situation worsened, another flight attendant intervened and prepared restraints while repeatedly instructing the passenger to return to his seat. Authorities said the individual swung toward the second crew member but did not make physical contact. Passengers reportedly gathered near the galley in an attempt to help de-escalate the situation.

The disturbance was classified as a “level three” threat by the flight crew, triggering a cockpit lockdown. Pilots coordinated with airline operations before making the decision to divert the aircraft. The diversion required additional planning, including calculations for landing an aircraft carrying excess fuel intended for a long-haul international route.

Upon arrival in Anchorage, airport police and emergency responders met the aircraft at the gate and detained the passenger. He was later arrested and charged with interfering with flight crew members, a federal offense that can carry a penalty of up to 20 years in prison.

Authorities said video footage from passengers is being reviewed as part of the investigation. No injuries were reported during the incident.
