China Eastern Airlines has confirmed a major follow-on order for 101 Airbus A320neo family aircraft, reinforcing its fleet expansion strategy as demand for domestic and regional air travel continues to grow.

The order, disclosed in a stock exchange filing, is valued at approximately $15.8 billion at list prices and remains subject to government approval. Deliveries are scheduled between 2028 and 2032, ensuring a steady pipeline of new-generation narrowbody aircraft for the Shanghai-based carrier.

The latest deal builds on China Eastern’s existing Airbus backlog. Of its previously ordered A320neo aircraft, 85 out of 102 have already been delivered, while 27 A321neos have been received from a total order of 68. The new agreement effectively extends the airline’s narrowbody fleet renewal program into the next decade.

The aircraft follow a broader trend established by China’s major carriers. In July 2022, China Eastern joined Air China and China Southern Airlines in a landmark order for nearly 300 A320neo family aircraft. The new 101-aircraft order aligns with the airline’s long-term growth strategy and ensures continued fleet modernization as earlier deliveries are completed.

China Eastern is also balancing its fleet between domestic manufacturing and international suppliers. In September 2023, the airline placed an order for 100 COMAC C919 aircraft, with deliveries planned between 2024 and 2031. The first C919 entered service in early 2023, and the airline currently operates 14 units as of early 2026.

However, production constraints at COMAC’s Shanghai facility have limited the pace of deliveries, prompting airlines to maintain strong ties with Airbus to meet capacity targets. The additional A320neo family aircraft will help China Eastern sustain growth while diversifying its fleet mix.

The order comes amid a wave of aircraft purchases by Chinese carriers. In recent months, multiple airlines—including Air China, Spring Airlines, and Juneyao Airlines—have collectively ordered more than 140 Airbus narrowbody aircraft, highlighting robust demand in the world’s second-largest aviation market.

The Airbus A320neo family remains one of the most in-demand aircraft globally, offering approximately 15–20% lower fuel burn and emissions compared to previous-generation models, along with improved operating economics.

For China Eastern, the expanded order strengthens its position in China’s competitive domestic market while supporting its regional network across Asia. As travel demand continues to recover and expand, the airline is positioning itself with a modern, fuel-efficient fleet capable of meeting future growth and sustainability goals.
