Air Algérie is accelerating its fleet modernization strategy with a confirmed order for 10 Boeing 737-8 aircraft, part of a broader state-backed initiative to upgrade the airline’s aging fleet and expand its international network.

The deal, finalized in 2026 under a national aviation development plan led by Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aims to position the carrier as a stronger competitor across Africa and the Mediterranean while supporting long-term passenger growth.

“This order is a broader move to keep pace with developments in the aviation sector and meet the demands of domestic and international markets, strengthening our competitiveness.” Air Algérie Official Statement.

A key element of the strategy is the accelerated delivery timeline. Air Algérie has secured earlier production slots originally allocated to GOL Linhas Aéreas, allowing the airline to bypass typical multi-year wait times for new narrowbody aircraft.

Under the current schedule, the first Boeing 737-8 is expected to join the fleet as early as July 2026, with five aircraft delivered during 2026. The remaining five jets are planned for delivery throughout 2027, ensuring a steady expansion of capacity.

The new aircraft will support Air Algérie’s goal of carrying up to 10 million passengers annually by the end of 2026, alongside the planned launch of a new domestic subsidiary aimed at strengthening regional connectivity.

Air Algérie is continuing to pursue a dual-manufacturer fleet strategy, balancing Boeing and Airbus aircraft to meet both short-haul and long-haul requirements. In addition to the 737-8 order, the airline has eight Boeing 737-9 aircraft on order from the 2023 Paris Air Show, with deliveries expected to begin in 2027. These aircraft will gradually replace older Boeing 737-600 jets, some of which are more than two decades old.

On the widebody side, fleet renewal is already underway with the introduction of Airbus A330-900 aircraft. The airline received its third A330neo in January 2026 and expects to operate a total of 10 by mid-2027, enhancing long-haul efficiency and passenger comfort.

To further strengthen domestic operations, Air Algérie is also adding 16 ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft between 2026 and 2028, improving connectivity across Algeria’s regional network.

The Boeing 737-8, part of the 737 Max family, offers approximately 15–20% lower fuel consumption and emissions compared to previous-generation aircraft, making it a key component of the airline’s sustainability and cost-efficiency strategy.

With this multi-faceted fleet renewal program, Air Algérie is positioning itself for growth in both domestic and international markets, while modernizing its operations to meet evolving passenger demand and competitive pressures.
