IndiGo has appointed Willie Walsh as its next Chief Executive Officer, marking a high-profile leadership shift that is set to reshape the airline’s global ambitions.

Walsh, currently Director General of International Air Transport Association, will step down from his role on July 31, 2026, and is expected to take over at IndiGo by August 3, 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

The appointment follows the departure of former CEO Pieter Elbers, who resigned on March 10 after a turbulent period for the airline. In December 2025, IndiGo faced a major operational disruption linked to new pilot flight duty time limitations, affecting more than 900,000 passengers and resulting in regulatory penalties from India’s aviation authorities.

Since Elbers’ exit, Rahul Bhatia has overseen day-to-day operations, stabilizing the airline during a critical transition phase.

Walsh brings decades of leadership experience across some of the world’s largest aviation groups. A former commercial pilot, he began his career with Aer Lingus before rising to CEO in 2001. He later led British Airways from 2005 to 2011 and went on to become the founding CEO of International Airlines Group, overseeing carriers including Iberia, Aer Lingus, and Vueling until 2020. Since 2021, he has headed IATA, representing airlines globally during a period of unprecedented industry disruption.

Known for his disciplined approach to cost management and operational efficiency, Walsh has earned a reputation as one of the industry’s most decisive executives. His appointment is widely viewed as a strategic move as IndiGo accelerates its transition from a dominant domestic low-cost carrier to a major international airline.

The airline is currently pursuing aggressive expansion plans, including long-haul growth supported by a significant widebody aircraft pipeline. Leadership believes Walsh’s experience managing complex, multi-brand airline groups will be critical in scaling IndiGo’s global footprint.

Vikram Singh Mehta described the appointment as transformative, citing Walsh’s track record in navigating competitive markets and leading large-scale operations.

The leadership change signals IndiGo’s intent to strengthen its position on the global stage, as competition intensifies and airlines adapt to shifting demand, regulatory pressures, and evolving network strategies.
