FAA to Launch New NOTAM System on April 18, 2026

The Federal Aviation Administration is set to replace its legacy Notice to Air Missions system with a modernized platform on April 18, 2026, marking a significant upgrade to critical aviation infrastructure.
The transition will see the current U.S. NOTAM System (USNS) officially retired and replaced by the new NOTAM Management Service (NMS), a cloud-based solution designed to improve reliability, speed, and resilience. The switchover is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, and is expected to be seamless for users across the aviation ecosystem.
According to industry officials, including representatives from the National Business Aviation Association, the transition should be “completely transparent” to pilots, airlines, and operators. There are no anticipated operational changes during the initial rollout, and the format of NOTAMs will remain the same.
To ensure uninterrupted access during the transition, the FAA confirmed that NOTAMs issued prior to the maintenance window will continue to be available through standard distribution channels. As an added precaution, the agency is recommending the use of its FNS NOTAM Search tool to access the most up-to-date and accurate information throughout the process.
The upgrade comes in response to longstanding concerns about the reliability of the legacy system, highlighted by the nationwide outage in January 2023 that temporarily grounded flights across the United States. That incident exposed vulnerabilities in aging infrastructure and accelerated efforts to modernize the system.
The new NMS platform introduces a cloud-based architecture capable of near real-time data exchange, offering improved system redundancy and performance. While users will not immediately notice changes in how NOTAMs are presented, the new system lays the groundwork for future enhancements. These could include simplified, plain-language notices and graphical interfaces designed to improve usability and situational awareness for pilots.
The modernization of the NOTAM system is a key step in strengthening the safety and efficiency of U.S. airspace operations. By transitioning to a more robust and scalable platform, the FAA aims to reduce the risk of disruptions while supporting the evolving needs of the aviation industry.
