Aarhus Airport Eyes Major Growth and New Routes in 2025

Aarhus Airport (AAR), serving Denmark’s second-largest city, is accelerating its strategic expansion in 2025 with new routes, increased international visibility, and ambitious plans to attract more airline partners. Located in the fifth-largest metropolitan catchment area in the Nordic region, AAR reaches nearly 1.4 million people and supports the fastest-growing economy in Denmark. The region also boasts one of the highest average disposable incomes in the country—surpassing even the capital—and has led the Nordics in inbound visitor growth for most of the past nine years.

In a key development this year, Turkish low-cost carrier Pegasus Airlines launched twice-weekly nonstop service from Aarhus to Antalya, significantly boosting international leisure travel and connecting Danish passengers to Central Asia and the Near East via Pegasus’ wider network. This new route reflects AAR’s push to fill key unserved markets and meet strong local demand, particularly in leisure and VFR (visiting friends and relatives) segments.

Speaking at Routes Europe 2025 in Seville, AAR’s director of route development, David Surley, emphasized the airport’s focus on unlocking untapped connectivity. “There are big markets still to fill across central and eastern Europe, the Mediterranean region, and Iberian Peninsula,” he said. “We also have strong demand from VFR markets in Aarhus and are actively seeking additional hub opportunities.” Surley confirmed that long-haul service development is also part of the airport’s long-term vision, signaling readiness to work with global carriers.

AAR has been proactive in building its network visibility, most notably by hosting Routes Europe 2024—a milestone event that brought global airline and airport executives to Aarhus. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to showcase our city and airport,” said Surley. At the 2025 edition in Seville, AAR continued to attract attention with a popular exhibition stand. “The event has been fantastic. Our stand has been consistently busy, with our baristas serving over 2,000 coffees,” he added. “Forums like Routes are essential for meaningful exchange and industry agility.”

To strengthen its positioning within the European and Nordic aviation landscape, Aarhus Airport leverages its Routes 360 profile to promote route opportunities, share updates, and highlight successes. The airport is targeting both network expansion and long-term partnerships with carriers looking to enter or expand in Denmark’s high-demand regions.

With high passenger potential, strong economic fundamentals, and robust inbound tourism growth, Aarhus Airport is emerging as a dynamic gateway in Scandinavia. As it builds on its 2025 momentum, AAR is focused on capturing new international services and establishing itself as a key airport for underserved European and long-haul routes.
