AEI Launches 737-900ER Freighter Conversion Program Targeting 2029

Aeronautical Engineers, Inc. (AEI) has announced a four-year plan to develop the first Boeing 737-900ER Special Freighter conversion, expanding its passenger-to-freighter (P2F) offering beyond the successful 737-800SF program. The company confirmed on October 22, 2025, that engineering work has begun on the 737-900ERSF, which will become the largest-capacity narrowbody freighter in AEI’s lineup.
AEI, licensed by Boeing as a third-party conversion provider, expects to receive FAA Supplemental Type Certification (STC) in 2029. Certification from EASA and the Civil Aviation Administration of China is planned to follow shortly thereafter.
“This is a strategic move to address the increasing demand for higher-capacity narrowbody freighters,” said Robert T. Convey, AEI’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. “As global e-commerce and express markets continue to expand, the 737-900ERSF will offer operators the right combination of payload, volume and operating economics.”
The 737-900ER Special Freighter will offer:
- Main deck payload up to 57,700 lbs (26,173 kg)
- Total cargo volume of 7,273 cu ft (207 m³)
- Up to 12 pallet positions (88″ x 125″ ULD)
- ANCRA cargo loading system
- Seating for up to five supernumeraries
- Class E cargo compartment with 9G rigid barrier and smoke detection
- Reinforced floor structure for high-density freight
- Optional 180-minute ETOPS capability
- Auxiliary fuel tank retained for extended range
AEI previously estimated market demand for as many as 200 converted 737-900ER aircraft. Current major operators of the passenger variant include Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Turkish Airlines and United Airlines — all potential feedstock sources as carriers modernize fleets.
