Aeroitalia Expands Fleet with New Embraer E-190 Regional Jet
Italian private airline Aeroitalia has expanded its fleet with the addition of a leased Embraer E-190 regional jet, marking a key step in the carrier’s strategy to strengthen its presence on both domestic and international routes. The aircraft, registered SX-PTM, was officially rolled out in Aeroitalia’s full color scheme on March 29, 2025, and will be primarily used on the airline’s busy Rome-Fiumicino to Milan-Malpensa route.
The new aircraft, nearly 17 years old, was originally delivered to the now-defunct Baboo Airlines (later Darwin Airline) of Switzerland in 2008. It is now owned by leasing firm Azzora and has been subleased to Aeroitalia on an ACMI (aircraft, crew, maintenance, insurance) basis. This arrangement will allow Aeroitalia to operate the Embraer E-190 exclusively on its domestic services, providing additional capacity for its growing route network. The aircraft, with a seating capacity of 100 in a 2×2 single-class layout, operated its first commercial flight on March 30, 2025, completing flight AEZ2023 from Rome to Milan in just 57 minutes over a 318-mile (509 km) route.
Aeroitalia, which began operations in late 2022, has been pursuing rapid growth and now operates a fleet of 14 aircraft on scheduled services within Italy and beyond. The airline’s current fleet includes nine Boeing 737-800s, two ATR72-600s, and four wet-leased aircraft, including the newly leased Embraer jets from Marathon Airlines. Aeroitalia has expanded its network to 21 routes, covering 17 destinations across four countries. Within Italy, the airline serves 16 points, including key cities such as Rome and Milan, and has also extended services to several destinations in central and eastern Europe, including Bucharest and Bacau (Romania), Brno (Czechia), and Lublin (Poland).
The airline’s fleet expansion includes another Embraer E-175, registered SX-ASK, which arrived from Marathon Airlines in January 2025. Both the E-190 and E-175 aircraft are deployed on longer sectors within Italy where demand does not justify the use of Aeroitalia’s larger Boeing 737s. While the E-190 is planned to mainly operate between Milan and Rome, the smaller E-175 will serve regional routes within Italy, particularly from Aeroitalia’s southern base at Comiso Airport (CIY) in Sicily. The E-175 will operate flights to secondary airports such as Parma and Cuneo, as well as destinations in Sicily including Trapani, Catania, and Palermo.
Aeroitalia’s decision to paint the new Embraer jets in the airline’s patriotic green, red, and white color scheme further strengthens its brand identity and commitment to its growth strategy. The lease of the two Embraer jets, both on five-year arrangements, provides Aeroitalia with the flexibility to adjust its fleet and operations to meet the evolving demands of Italy’s domestic air travel market.
