AeroItalia to Sell Aeroitalia Regional After Restructuring in 2025

AeroItalia plans to sell its dormant and financially troubled subsidiary, Aeroitalia Regional, by the end of 2025, CEO Gaetano Intrieri confirmed in an interview with ch-aviation. The regional airline, formerly known as AirConnect, is currently undergoing a restructuring process expected to conclude by year-end.
Intrieri revealed that four parties have expressed interest in acquiring Aeroitalia Regional. However, a final decision on the sale will be made only after the restructuring is completed. The potential sale is aimed at offloading the regional carrier, which has been inactive and burdened by financial difficulties.
Contrary to media reports in 2024, Intrieri denied that start-up Aerolinee Siciliane had acquired Aeroitalia Regional to fast-track its launch and bypass certification requirements. He clarified that the company never submitted a binding offer.
Aeroitalia Regional previously operated two ATR72-600 turboprops, both of which have since been transferred to the mainline AeroItalia fleet. The subsidiary currently has no aircraft in operation.
The Romanian Civil Aeronautical Authority suspended Aeroitalia Regional’s Air Operator Certificate (AOC) on November 7, 2024. While the reason for the suspension was not disclosed, the certificate has not been revoked. The airline entered bankruptcy reorganization in January 2025 due to unsustainable debt levels.
AeroItalia’s decision to divest the struggling unit aligns with its broader strategy to streamline operations and focus on growth in its mainline business, while offering Aeroitalia Regional as a restructured asset to prospective buyers in the regional aviation market.
