Aerolíneas Argentinas will exercise long-held fifth freedom rights to operate seasonal flights from Brazil to Uruguay, marking the first time in more than a decade the airline has used such traffic rights.

The carrier confirmed it will launch services from São Paulo Guarulhos and Porto Alegre to Punta del Este between late December 2025 and the end of January 2026. The move will complement the airline’s expanded schedules from Buenos Aires and Córdoba to both Montevideo and Punta del Este during the busy Southern Hemisphere summer season.

Flights from São Paulo to Punta del Este will begin December 25, with departures on Thursdays and Fridays and return legs on Sundays and Mondays. The Porto Alegre–Punta del Este route will launch a day later, December 26, following the same twice-weekly schedule. Both routes will run through January 31, 2026.

This is the first time Aerolíneas Argentinas has exercised fifth freedom rights since 2012, when it briefly operated flights between Buenos Aires, Auckland, and Sydney. The new seasonal services are expected to attract strong demand from Brazilian travelers heading to Uruguay’s luxury coastal resorts, as well as Argentinians seeking greater connectivity options in the region.

By tapping into Brazil-Uruguay fifth freedom traffic, Aerolíneas Argentinas aims to strengthen its presence in South America’s leisure travel market during peak holiday months. The airline anticipates that the seasonal routes will not only boost tourism flows to Punta del Este but also reinforce regional ties ahead of its broader 2026 operational plans.
