Aeromexico Tops 2024 Global Airline On-Time Performance Rankings

Aeromexico has emerged as the most punctual global airline in 2024, according to a report by aviation analytics firm Cirium. The airline achieved an impressive 86.7% on-time performance, with its flights arriving within 15 minutes of their scheduled times.
Cirium’s CEO, Jeremy Bowen, expressed surprise at the airline’s ascent to the top spot, noting that Aeromexico’s on-time performance had increased by an astounding 9% over the past year. “They’ve had a remarkable year,” Bowen said, highlighting the airline’s jump from outside the top 10 to No. 1 as an unprecedented achievement in the aviation industry. Bowen also attributed this success to Aeromexico’s strong company culture, its investment in new equipment, and its close partnership with Mexico City International Airport, which ranked fourth for on-time arrivals among global airports.
Saudia, formerly known as Saudi Arabian Airlines, ranked second, improving significantly from its ninth-place position in 2023. With 86.35% of its flights arriving on time, Saudia’s remarkable improvement has been a key highlight in the 2024 report. Delta Air Lines followed closely behind in third place with 83.46% on-time performance, while Latam Airlines (82.89%) and Qatar Airways (82.83%) rounded out the top five global airlines for punctuality.
For the fourth consecutive year, Delta Air Lines was recognized by Cirium as the “best global airline for operational excellence,” a title awarded due to its combination of punctuality and size. Despite the positive performance of individual airlines, Bowen noted that overall on-time flight arrivals dropped by 0.5% in 2024 compared to the previous year, due to factors like software disruptions and extreme weather events impacting punctuality.
Regional Performance Insights
Cirium’s report also analyzed regional airline on-time performance, with several regional carriers outperforming their global counterparts. Safair, based in South Africa, topped the Middle East and Africa region with a remarkable 93.82% on-time rate. Oman Air and Copa Airlines also performed strongly, with on-time rates of 90.27% and 88.22%, respectively.
In Europe, Iberia Express maintained its top position with 84.69%, followed by Iberia at 81.58%. Asia-Pacific’s Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways led the region with 80.9% and 80.62% on-time performance, though both saw slight declines from the previous year.
In North America, Delta Air Lines held the top spot at 83.46%, followed by United Airlines (80.93%) and Alaska Airlines (79.25%).
Notable Airports and Low-Cost Carriers
King Khalid International Airport in Saudi Arabia ranked first among global airports, achieving more than 86% on-time departures. For medium-sized airports, Panama’s Tocumen International topped the list, while Ecuador’s Jose Joaquin de Olmedo International Airport was the most punctual small airport.
In the low-cost carrier category, Iberia Express led with 84.69%, followed by Gol Linhas Aereas (84.09%) and Azul Airlines (82.42%).
Cirium’s 2024 On-Time Performance Review underscores the growing importance of punctuality in the airline industry. As passenger satisfaction hinges on timely departures and arrivals, airlines that maintain high levels of operational efficiency continue to set the standard for the industry.
