NASA and United Airlines led tributes to former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson described Carter as the “pinnacle of a public servant” whose legacy will live on. Nelson highlighted Carter’s belief in finding common ground through the exploration of space, adding that Carter’s words will forever belong to the heavens.

United Airlines shared a historical photo of Carter disembarking from a chartered aircraft during the 1976 presidential campaign, joining the nation in mourning his death and honoring his service.

Delta Air Lines reflected on Carter’s personal touch when flying with the airline, recalling how he would greet passengers personally. The airline paid tribute to his legacy as a friend, family man, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and moral leader.

President Joe Biden also honored Carter, describing him as a man of “character, courage, and compassion,” whose lifetime of service defined him as one of the most influential statesmen in U.S. history. Biden praised Carter as a “heroic champion of global peace and human rights.”

In a fitting tribute, NASA’s Voyager 1, the farthest human-made object in space, carries a message from Carter addressed to any potential life forms that may encounter it. His message reads, “We hope someday, having solved the problems we face, to join a community of galactic civilizations.”

A National Day of Mourning will be observed on January 9, 2024, to honor President Carter’s contributions to the nation and the world.
