Air Astana Fleet Simplification with Modified A321LRs and Expansion Plans

Air Astana is continuing its fleet simplification strategy, with CEO Peter Foster stating that the airline now has the “simplest fleet profile” in its history. Following the retirement of its E190-E2s, the state-owned airline operates an all A320 Family fleet and three Boeing 767-300ERs.

During a March 14, 2025 earnings call, Foster highlighted the success of adding a third fuel tank to six A321-200NX(LR) aircraft. This modification increased the range of the aircraft from approximately 3,600 nautical miles to 4,200 nautical miles, enabling nonstop flights from Almaty to London with a full payload. The airline has completed this modification on four of the six aircraft, with the remaining two expected to be modified by the start of summer 2025. Foster confirmed that the modifications eliminate the need for A321-200NY(XLR) variants, which were considered “expensive.”

Air Astana is also extending the life of its A320/A321neo aircraft and managing Pratt & Whitney engine issues. The airline grounds aircraft during the low season to preserve engine life, allowing maximum aircraft availability during peak periods. Foster expects engine challenges to continue until mid-2027.

The airline plans to take delivery of four aircraft in 2025, including three A320neo and one A321neo. Additionally, FlyArystan’s separation from Air Astana remains incomplete, with FlyArystan continuing to be part of the Air Astana Group, as the separation process is still underway.
