Air Astana (KC, Astana Nursultan Nazarbayev) has repurchased more than USD 6 million worth of shares and global depositary receipts (GDRs) as part of its ongoing buyback scheme, which was launched in late April. According to the airline’s most recent regulatory filing, a total of 2,126,646 ordinary shares and 309,299 GDRs (representing 1,237,196 shares) were repurchased between April 30 and November 18, for a total of USD 6,192,492.56.

The buyback initiative is intended to fulfill the airline’s employee incentive scheme obligations. For the first phase of the programme, Air Astana aims to repurchase up to 4,786,800 shares, equivalent to around 1.3% of its total issued shares (including those represented by GDRs), at a maximum cost of USD 12 million.

In related news, Air Astana CEO Peter Foster addressed ongoing speculation about the airline launching flights to the United States in the near future. Despite having three Boeing 787-8 and three Boeing 787-9 aircraft on order, which would allow Air Astana to expand its long-haul network, Foster did not confirm any immediate plans for U.S. operations. “Last time we were told it would be by the end of 2025, but with the current situation, we can’t be sure,” Foster stated, referencing delays in Boeing deliveries.

Foster also clarified that the incoming B787s would not replace the airline’s current fleet of three Boeing 767-300ERs. These aircraft, which are still in use on European and Southeast Asian routes, will remain with Air Astana at least until the end of 2028. Foster noted that the B767s are effective high-season aircraft, serving specific routes during peak travel periods.
