Air Botswana Embarks on Fleet Expansion and Regional Network Growth with Government Support

Air Botswana, the national flag carrier, is set to enhance its operational capabilities and regional presence with the acquisition of at least three Embraer aircraft, funded by the government. This strategic move, revealed by the airline’s new General Manager, Lulu Rasebotsa, during the recent ITB Berlin Convention, aims to bolster the airline’s regional connectivity, particularly across sub-Saharan Africa.

With an eye on expanding its route network, Rasebotsa announced that Air Botswana is in the process of recruiting Embraer-trained crew, although the specific model of the Embraer aircraft under consideration has yet to be disclosed. The initiative is part of a broader ambition to position Air Botswana as a regional hub in Southern Africa, leveraging its strategic geographical location.

The government’s commitment to the national carrier’s growth is evident in the allocation of BWP121.2 million pula (USD8.8 million) in the 2024-25 draft budget, providing the necessary financial backing for the fleet expansion plan. According to Rasebotsa, this investment will facilitate the launch of new routes from Maun to key destinations including Johannesburg O.R. Tambo, Cape Town International, Windhoek International, Kasane, and Gaborone to Durban King Shaka.

Currently, Air Botswana’s fleet comprises one ERJ 170-100LR and two ATR72-600s, servicing routes from four domestic points to international destinations such as Johannesburg, Cape Town, Harare, and Lusaka.

Rasebotsa, who succeeded former GM Agnes Khunwana, has articulated a strategic vision focused on achieving financial sustainability for Air Botswana. Central to her strategy are three pillars: enhancing employee engagement and morale, elevating the customer experience, and advancing digitisation efforts to improve operational efficiency. She underscores the importance of regaining the confidence of the Botswana public by demonstrating a commitment to safety, zero corruption, and adherence to civil aviation regulations.

This fleet enhancement and network expansion initiative represent a significant step forward for Air Botswana in its quest to improve connectivity within the region and beyond, aiming to foster economic growth and meet the increasing demand for air travel in Southern Africa.
