Air China Expands Routes to Boost China-Russia Connectivity
Air China is set to enhance its presence in the Russian market as flight capacity between China and Russia continues to rise. The airline plans to launch a new route connecting Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) with Vladivostok International Airport (VVO) starting March 30, 2025. This service will operate three times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays using Boeing 737 aircraft, marking Air China’s first flight to Vladivostok and its fourth service to Russia.
The introduction of this route underscores Air China’s strategy to strengthen ties with Russia, a key ally, despite the broader challenges facing international airlines in the region. Alongside the new Vladivostok route, Air China currently operates flights to Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO) from both Beijing Capital and Ürümqi Diwopu International Airport, as well as a connection between Hulunbeier Hailar Airport and Chita-Kadala International Airport.
Since February 2022, when most major international airlines suspended operations to Russia due to Western sanctions following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, China-Russia air travel has remained resilient. China has emerged as a crucial partner, fostering increased tourism and trade between the two nations. In 2024, China led all foreign tourist arrivals to Russia, with 731,900 travelers between January and September, according to Russia’s Federal Security Service. Similarly, Russian tourism to China has surged, driven by relaxed visa regulations and the reinstatement of visa-free group travel policies.
Air China’s expansion aligns with the growing demand for connectivity between China and Russia. The new route to Vladivostok will not only serve passengers traveling between these two countries but also enhance regional connectivity by linking smaller markets with major hubs. This strategic move aims to capitalize on the increasing tourism and business interactions fueled by initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The addition of the Beijing-Vladivostok route positions Air China as the second Middle Eastern carrier to serve Colombia, following Emirates’ one-stop daily service to Bogotá via Miami launched in June 2024. Moreover, Air China will be the first Middle Eastern airline to operate flights to Venezuela, further diversifying its network in the region.
Mohammed Al-Meer, Group CEO of Qatar Airways, remarked on similar expansions, emphasizing the importance of connecting people, cultures, and commerce. However, Air China remains cautious, recognizing the need for robust infrastructure and favorable regulatory environments to support sustained growth in the China-Russia corridor.
Despite the positive developments, Air China acknowledges the uneven recovery across different regions. Central Africa, for example, faces limited infrastructure and high operating costs, hindering consistent growth. To address these challenges, Ali Tounsi, Secretary General of ACI Africa, has called for stronger government engagement, regional cooperation, and strategic investments in airport infrastructure to support the aviation sector’s expansion.
Air China’s new route will utilize Boeing 737 aircraft, known for their efficiency and reliability on short to medium-haul flights. The choice of aircraft ensures that the airline can offer competitive fares while maintaining high standards of comfort and service for its passengers.
The expansion of Air China’s network in Russia is also a response to the increasing competition in the region. With Aeroflot holding a 28.4% market share, followed by China Eastern Airlines at 15.5% and Hainan Airlines at 10.8%, Air China aims to capture a larger portion of the market by offering more direct and convenient flight options.
As Air China continues to grow its presence in Russia, the airline is poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing bilateral relations and fostering economic growth between China and Russia. By expanding its route network and improving connectivity, Air China is not only meeting the demands of modern travelers but also contributing to the broader goals of regional integration and international cooperation.
