Air Europa Becomes Spain’s First 737-8 Max Operator

Air Europa has officially introduced the Boeing 737-8 Max into its fleet, becoming the first airline in Spain to operate the advanced aircraft type. The new aircraft, delivered on May 21, 2025, marks a major milestone in the airline’s ongoing fleet modernization strategy and is the first of 29 737-8s that Air Europa is set to receive under a leasing agreement with AerCap signed in 2022.
This delivery signals the beginning of a new phase for Air Europa, with three additional 737-8 aircraft expected to join the fleet before the end of 2025. A further 12 units are scheduled for delivery in 2026, followed by four more by mid-2027. The 737-8s will be deployed on medium-haul continental routes as well as short-haul domestic services across Spain, enabling the airline to improve efficiency and lower costs while enhancing the passenger experience.
Air Europa President Juan José Hidalgo hailed the delivery as the start of a new era, stating that the MAX 8 not only supports the airline’s modernization goals but also strengthens its commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency. He emphasized the aircraft’s role in reducing fuel burn, lowering emissions, and cutting maintenance and operational costs, which will help the carrier meet its long-term profitability targets.
The airline has focused its fleet strategy exclusively on Boeing aircraft for several years, and the addition of the 737-8 reinforces this commitment. Air Europa’s current active fleet includes 17 Boeing 737-800s for short- and medium-haul operations and 25 Boeing 787 Dreamliners—split between nine 787-8s and 16 787-9s—for long-haul routes.
AerCap CEO Aengus Kelly commented that the milestone delivery underlines Air Europa’s leadership in sustainable aviation in Spain and praised the airline’s vision for renewing its fleet with cutting-edge technology. Boeing also highlighted the significance of the delivery, with Ricardo Cavero, Vice President of Commercial Sales & Marketing for Europe and Israel, noting that the aircraft will play a vital role in Air Europa’s growth and decarbonization strategies.
The Boeing 737-8 offers up to 14 percent greater fuel efficiency and 50 percent lower emissions compared to previous generation aircraft, making it a key asset in reducing Air Europa’s environmental impact. Its integration into the fleet positions the airline to serve existing markets more efficiently and potentially expand into new ones.
