Air Ghana to Expand into Passenger Services by Late 2025

Air Ghana (GO, Accra), a long-standing cargo carrier, is preparing to launch passenger operations by the fourth quarter of 2025, marking a significant shift in its business strategy. While no formal public announcement has been issued, the airline has begun recruiting staff for sales, ticketing, and call center roles, signaling an imminent expansion.

In a statement to Aviation Ghana, the company confirmed it is in the “intermediate stage” of transitioning into passenger services, with plans to begin operations by late 2025, pending regulatory and operational approvals. Further details will be shared in due course.

Air Ghana is expected to use a Boeing 737 for its upcoming passenger services. Currently, the airline operates regional night cargo and courier flights on behalf of DHL International. Its cargo fleet includes a Boeing 737-400(F) leased from Swiftair, a Boeing 737-400(SF) also from Swiftair, and a Boeing 737-800(BCF) wet-leased from AirExplore.

The passenger airline market in Ghana remains relatively small, with just two home-based carriers—Africa World Airlines and PassionAir. The government has also expressed intentions to revive a national carrier following the collapse of Ghana International Airlines in 2010.

Ghana’s aviation market presents strong growth potential. In 2024, only 2.15% of Ghanaians traveled by air, but that figure is projected to grow to 15% by 2028. Air Ghana’s entry into the passenger sector could play a pivotal role in expanding domestic and regional connectivity while capitalizing on rising demand in West Africa’s underserved air travel market.
