Air Greenland Expands Fleet with A320neo
Air Greenland is set to boost its route network and enhance its fleet flexibility with a new lease agreement for an Airbus A320neo from Carlyle Aviation. The six-year lease, with an option to extend, was signed on February 14, 2025, by Air Greenland CEO Jacob Nitter Sørensen. The new aircraft is slated for delivery in December 2026 and will be customized to meet the unique challenges of operating in Greenland’s harsh conditions.
This strategic acquisition comes at a pivotal time for Air Greenland as it prepares for major infrastructure developments. The arrival of the A320neo will coincide with the anticipated opening of North Greenland’s Ilulissat International Airport (JAV) in late 2026, which will feature a 2,200-meter runway designed to handle increased international traffic. “The delivery time for new Airbus aircraft is currently 6-7 years, so we have chosen to lease the aircraft to be ready when the new international airport in Ilulissat opens and to gain financial flexibility as the route is still new,” Sørensen explained.
The Airbus A320neo will launch a new direct route from Ilulissat to Copenhagen, further expanding Air Greenland’s international connectivity. This route complements the carrier’s existing operations; its Airbus A330neo already serves the route between Nuuk Airport (NUK) and Copenhagen. With the addition of the A320neo, Air Greenland will be better positioned to adjust capacity dynamically between the larger A330neo and the smaller, more versatile A320neo based on route demand.
The strategic move not only underscores Air Greenland’s commitment to meeting growing passenger demand but also positions the airline to capitalize on emerging opportunities in the region. The new A320neo is expected to offer improved fuel efficiency, lower operating costs, and enhanced passenger comfort—attributes that are essential for long-haul routes in challenging environments like Greenland.
SAS, which currently maintains Air Greenland’s A330-800 fleet, will also be responsible for the maintenance of the new A320neo once it enters service. This shared maintenance arrangement is expected to streamline operations and ensure that the new aircraft is well-supported from day one. Additionally, Air Greenland plans to retrain some of its Dash-8 pilots to fly the new A320neo, ensuring that its flight crew remains versatile and capable of operating multiple aircraft types.
By expanding its fleet with the A320neo, Air Greenland is taking a significant step in diversifying its fleet and enhancing its route network. The new aircraft will enable the carrier to serve additional destinations and adapt quickly to market demand, contributing to a more robust and flexible operational model.
As the airline prepares for the 2027 summer schedule, the new A320neo lease agreement is expected to be a catalyst for further growth.
