Air Greenland to Add A320neo for Ilulissat Airport
Air Greenland (GL), headquartered in Nuuk, has announced its intention to acquire an Airbus A320-200N in late 2026 to support the upcoming inauguration of the new Ilulissat Airport. Chief Executive Jacob Nitter Sørensen shared these plans during an interview with Aviation Week, highlighting the strategic fleet expansion following recent renewals.
The addition of the A320neo marks a significant milestone for Air Greenland, complementing the recent incorporation of an A330-800N and a DHC-8-Q200 into the fleet in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Sørensen emphasized that the company has reached a pivotal point where expanding the fleet with another jet aircraft aligns with their growth strategy.
“That’s the game plan, to keep building up new routes based on ACMI. And then, when it reaches sort of a sustainable level, we add another aircraft,” Sørensen explained. “So we are looking at adding an A320neo, which can be flown mixed-rating [by the A330neo pilots].”
The planned acquisition of the A320neo will provide Air Greenland with enhanced flexibility, allowing the airline to switch between widebody and narrowbody configurations within its schedule. This adaptability is crucial for optimizing flight operations and meeting varying passenger and cargo demands.
Current Fleet Composition and Future Plans
As per the ch-aviation fleets module, Air Greenland currently operates a fleet of ten aircraft, including one A330-800N, one DHC-8-200, seven DHC-8-Q200s, and two Hawker 800XPs. Additionally, the airline operates several helicopters to support its diverse operational needs.
Despite plans for expansion, Air Greenland faces challenges in renewing its Dash 8 fleet. Sørensen noted, “That type is the only aircraft that can operate in and out of these runways, unless you are looking at much smaller aircraft, which don’t have the range and the all-weather capabilities that we need. So right now there is no replacement aircraft for the Dash 8 because ATR – Avions de Transport Régional, they decided to cancel the ATR42-600 STOL model. So right now there is no replacement possible.”
This limitation underscores the importance of maintaining the existing Dash 8 fleet to ensure reliable operations in and out of challenging runways, particularly in remote and harsh environments where Air Greenland operates.
