Air India Express Hits 100 Aircraft Milestone with New Boeing 737-8

Air India Express, the low-cost subsidiary of Air India, has reached a significant milestone by increasing its fleet size to 100 aircraft with the addition of a new Boeing 737 MAX 8. The airline, which celebrated the occasion on March 10, 2025, with staff posing for photos alongside the aircraft, marked this achievement as a key moment in its growth.
The newly added aircraft, registered VT-BWI, is adorned with Karnataka’s Chittara tail art and is part of the carrier’s expanding fleet, which has nearly doubled since the relaunch and integration of Air India Express. The airline now connects 54 destinations across India, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, with over 500 daily flights scheduled by the end of March 2025.
In November 2022, Tata Group acquired a 100% stake in AirAsia India and merged it with Air India Express, creating a single low-cost carrier. This strategic move has led to the introduction of a new branding and livery for the airline.
Aloke Singh, Managing Director of Air India Express, highlighted the rapid growth of the airline, emphasizing the expansion of its fleet with modern, fuel-efficient aircraft and the strengthening of its domestic and international networks. He noted that Air India Express now has a significant presence in India, focusing on tier 2 and tier 3 cities, which are seen as key to the country’s aviation future.
The new Boeing 737 MAX 8 arrived in February 2025, previously operated by China Eastern Yunnan Airlines. The five-year-old aircraft entered service with Air India Express on March 7, 2025, and has already been flying passengers between Guwahati International, Bengaluru Kempegowda, and Imphal Airports.
Currently, Air India Express operates a fleet that includes 12 A320neos, 24 A320ceos, 26 Boeing 737s, and 38 Boeing 737-8s, continuing its growth trajectory in the competitive low-cost carrier market.
