Air India Express Seizes Boeing 737 MAX Advantage

Air India Express is poised to complete an extraordinary delivery streak of Boeing B737 MAX aircraft by mid-year, marking the end of an era as the carrier takes full advantage of a unique opportunity arising from previously ordered stock from Chinese carriers. Since September 2023, the low-cost unit of Air India has consistently received nearly two new B737-8s every month, a trend that reflects both the manufacturer’s inventory clearance strategy and the carrier’s aggressive fleet expansion plans. This phase of expedited deliveries will conclude once Boeing has delivered the final aircraft from its reserved stock, originally ordered by Chinese operators but not taken up by them.
The ongoing influx of B737 MAX aircraft has allowed Air India Express to rapidly bolster its narrowbody fleet. To date, the carrier has accepted 41 of these aircraft, with nine more scheduled for delivery before the end of June. This rapid expansion has not only enabled the airline to expand its domestic and regional connectivity but has also provided it with a competitive edge over its rivals in the increasingly crowded Indian aviation market. Following the delivery of these nine additional aircraft, Boeing will have completed its commitment to clear out the existing stockpile, and Air India Express will then have to join the longer delivery queue for future orders.
Boeing’s commitment to expediting these deliveries was emphasized by its Chief Financial Officer, Brian West, during the Bank of America Global Industrials Conference in March. West noted that the manufacturer has been actively working to clear out airplanes that were inventory builds from previous years. This proactive approach has allowed Boeing to serve multiple customers simultaneously and support airlines like Air India Express in meeting their rapid fleet growth needs.
The strategic move to utilize aircraft initially reserved for Chinese carriers is part of a broader trend among Indian aviation companies, which have taken advantage of available inventory from both Airbus and Boeing. Air India Express, along with its parent company Air India—both owned by Tata Sons—has placed large orders with the major manufacturers, ensuring that they receive accelerated deliveries when available. While Air India Express has an impressive order book that includes an additional 90 B737-8s and 50 B737-10s, no further deliveries from Boeing are expected after June until early 2026, marking a potential lull in the near-term aircraft supply.
In contrast, competitor IndiGo Airlines, which is executing a large narrowbody order with Airbus, expects to receive one new aircraft every week over a similar period. This difference in delivery scheduling highlights the competitive dynamics in the Indian aviation market, as carriers strive to enhance their fleets and meet the increasing demand for air travel. The broader context of the Indian aviation industry is underscored by Boeing’s latest order data, which shows that Indian operators collectively have 509 aircraft on order. This includes significant allocations for both B737-8s and B737-10s to Air India Express, as well as notable orders placed by other key players such as Akasa Air and SpiceJet, and even includes larger widebody orders for Air India.
This period of rapid delivery underscores a transformative moment for Air India Express and the broader industry, as the accelerated fleet expansion driven by opportunistic acquisitions from Boeing positions the carrier to capture greater market share. In the coming years, the shift from expedited inventory deliveries to the standard delivery queue is expected to bring new challenges and opportunities, reinforcing the dynamic nature of fleet management and competition in the fast-growing Indian aviation sector.
