Air India Gains DGCA Approval for In-House Aircraft Interior Modifications
Air India has received Design Organization Approval (DOA) from India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), enabling it to make in-house modifications to its aircraft interiors. This approval, granted under CAR 21 regulations, makes Air India the first Indian airline with this level of authorization, allowing it to expedite fleet enhancements and maintain interior standards independently.
On October 28, 2024, Air India announced the regulatory milestone, marking a key step in the airline’s ongoing fleet modernization efforts. CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson highlighted the airline’s commitment to advancing India’s aviation sector: “This approval reaffirms our capabilities to maintain our fleet and underscores our commitment to enhancing the customer experience.”
The DGCA’s Director General D.C. Sharma formally presented the certification to Wilson on October 25, 2024, in a ceremony attended by senior officials from both Air India and DGCA. The approval aligns with Air India’s strategy to improve aircraft interiors, a goal it shares with Tata Technologies, which recently partnered with Air India to bring design and engineering enhancements to its fleet under CAR 21 standards.
Warren Harris, CEO of Tata Technologies, commented, “Our partnership with Air India represents a significant step forward in redefining air travel experiences through innovation and strategic engineering.”
With DOA in hand, Air India plans to develop internal engineering, maintenance, and training centers to increase operational efficiency and self-reliance. The move aims to support Air India’s broader goal of consistently upgrading its fleet while setting a new standard for in-house capabilities in India’s aviation industry.
