Air India Invests $400 Million to Upgrade Fleet with Modern Cabins and New Seats
Air India announced on September 17 the commencement of a significant $400 million refurbishment program aimed at modernizing 67 of its legacy aircraft. This ambitious project will see a phased revamp of the airline’s fleet, introducing new seats, updated cabin interiors, and a refreshed livery to enhance passenger experience. The upgrade will begin with 27 narrow-body Airbus A320neo aircraft, followed by 40 wide-body Boeing planes.
The first aircraft to undergo the refit is the single-aisle A320neo registered as VT-EXN, which entered the hangar on Monday. After prototyping and obtaining necessary regulatory approvals, VT-EXN is expected to rejoin commercial service in December 2024. It will join eight recently delivered A320neo planes that already feature upgraded cabin interiors and configurations.
Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India, stated, “The commencement of interior refit of the narrow-body fleet is an important step in our journey of enhancing the flying experience of our customers. Over time, all the legacy wide-body aircraft will also be refitted. This comprehensive upgradation of Air India’s physical product is an important component of Air India transforming into a world-class airline.”
The refurbished A320neo aircraft will offer a three-class configuration: eight luxurious seats in Business Class, 24 extra-legroom seats in Premium Economy, and 132 comfortable seats in Economy Class. Passengers can expect modern amenities such as lie-flat beds, adjustable lighting, humidifiers, ergonomic seating, USB ports with Type A and C options, and personal electronic device holders. The cabins will also feature new carpets, curtains, and upholstery that reflect the airline’s updated brand identity.
Air India’s Engineering team will coordinate the refit project in collaboration with global original equipment manufacturers like Collins, Astronics, and Thales. The initiative involves installing over 15,000 next-generation seats across all classes. In parallel, preparations are underway for upgrading 40 legacy wide-body Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft, with retrofitting expected to commence in early 2025.
This extensive refurbishment underscores Air India’s commitment to enhancing passenger comfort and transforming into a world-class airline. The upgraded fleet aims to provide an inflight experience that caters to the needs of today’s discerning travelers, reinforcing the airline’s position in the competitive aviation industry.
