Air India Launches New BMTO in Bengaluru for Engineers
Air India is set to enhance its workforce capabilities by establishing a new Basic Maintenance Training Organization (BMTO) in Bengaluru, the capital and largest city of Karnataka, southern India. This strategic initiative aims to train the next generation of aircraft maintenance engineers, ensuring that the airline maintains high standards of safety and efficiency in its operations.
The Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) program at the BMTO, certified by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India’s aviation regulator, will offer a comprehensive curriculum combining two years of classroom instruction with two years of practical training. This robust training program is designed to equip cadets with the essential skills and hands-on experience required for modern aircraft maintenance and engineering roles.
Sunil Bhaskaran, Director of Aviation Academy at Air India, emphasized the importance of this new facility. “The BMTO will establish a pipeline of skilled engineers trained to Air India standards from the outset,” Bhaskaran stated. “This facility and program will enable our AME cadets to gain hands-on, real-world experience as part of their training.” By fostering a skilled workforce, Air India aims to support its growing fleet and ensure the reliability and safety of its aircraft operations.
Air India has partnered with Bengaluru Airport City Limited (BACL), a subsidiary of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), to develop the BMTO facility. Located near Air India’s upcoming 12-bay Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Bengaluru, the BMTO will be strategically positioned to leverage the advanced infrastructure and resources available at Kempegowda International Airport (BLR Airport). Spanning 86,000 square feet, the BMTO is slated to become operational by mid-2026, coinciding with the opening of the new MRO facility in early 2026.
The establishment of the BMTO in Bengaluru underscores Air India’s commitment to investing in local talent and supporting the aerospace industry in India. By providing specialized training programs, Air India aims to create a sustainable pipeline of qualified maintenance engineers who can meet the demands of the airline’s expanding fleet.
