Air India Reportedly in Talks for 200 More Narrowbody Jets

Air India, the national carrier owned by the Tata Group, is reportedly in discussions with Airbus and Boeing for a potential new aircraft order that could include around 200 additional narrowbody jets. The talks were reportedly ongoing during the 81st IATA Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in New Delhi, according to sources cited by Reuters.
Industry insiders suggest the negotiations could lead to a large-scale order involving various aircraft sizes, potentially expanding Air India’s existing fleet renewal and growth plans. While details remain confidential, two sources indicated the narrowbody component of the order could reach approximately 200 aircraft. Others noted that the discussions may also include additional widebody aircraft to support the airline’s long-haul operations.
Neither Airbus nor Boeing provided a comment on the reported talks. Air India CEO Campbell Wilson, when approached by AeroTime at the IATA AGM, dismissed the reports as “complete speculation” and stated that the airline does not comment on market rumors.
The development follows Air India’s record-breaking order in 2023 for 470 aircraft split between Airbus and Boeing, marking one of the largest commercial aviation deals in history. That order included a mix of narrowbody and widebody aircraft intended to modernize the fleet and support international expansion following the airline’s privatization under the Tata Group. In December 2024, Air India further expanded its fleet plans by ordering an additional 100 Airbus aircraft.
If confirmed, the new deal would underscore Air India’s ambition to become a global carrier of scale, targeting rapid capacity growth to meet increasing domestic and international demand.
