Air India Welcomes First A350-900, Preparing for Early 2024 Service

Air India has marked a significant milestone in its fleet modernization by taking delivery of its first Airbus A350-900. The aircraft arrived from Toulouse Blagnac to Delhi on December 23, 2023. This delivery is the first of a total of 20 A350-900s destined for Air India, signaling a new era in the airline’s operations.

Campbell Wilson, CEO of Air India, expressed his enthusiasm about the new addition, describing it as a symbol of the airline’s restructuring and a commitment to setting new performance benchmarks. Wilson emphasized that the arrival of the A350-900 is a significant step in showcasing the resurgence of Indian aviation on the global stage.

Originally manufactured for Aeroflot but undelivered due to sanctions, is slated to enter revenue service in January. Initially, it will operate domestic flights for crew familiarization, followed by deployment on international routes. Air India is scheduled to receive four more A350-900s by March 31, 2024, and plans to announce the aircraft’s initial routes in the coming weeks.

Wilson highlighted the A350-900’s superior flight economics and advanced technology, underscoring Air India’s focus on commercially viable operations. This addition is part of Air India’s broader fleet renewal and transformation program, which earlier this year included a large order for additional aircraft across Boeing and Airbus. The order comprises a diverse mix of models, totaling 501 aircraft, including A320-200Ns, A321-200Ns, A321-200NXs, A321-200NX(LR)s, A350-900s, A350-1000s, Boeing 787-8s, 777-300ERs, 777-9s, and 787-9s.

Furthermore, Air India’s fleet expansion will be complemented by the upcoming merger with Vistara (UK, Delhi International), both under the Tata Sons umbrella. The merger, expected to be finalized in 2024, will integrate Vistara’s fleet of 70 aircraft into Air India’s operations.

Currently, Air India’s fleet, including the newly arrived VT-JRA, consists of A319-100s, A320-200s, ACJ320-200Ns, A321-200s, A321-200NXs, B777-200LRs, B777-300ERs, and B787-8s. This fleet enhancement reflects Air India’s strategic vision to renew its fleet with modern, fuel-efficient aircraft, further strengthening its position as a key player in the competitive global aviation market.
