In a statement on its social media page, Air Mauritius has revealed that it has gone into voluntary administration due to financial constraints amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The company said that in January the airline was experiencing financial difficulties and had informed its Board of Directors. As a result, the Board had formed a Transformation Steering Committee in order to review the company’s business model with the intention to secure the airline’s future business operations.

On 22 April, the Board of Air Mauritius decided to put the airline into voluntary administration “to safeguard the interest of the company”. The future of the airline is unknown as this time.

The flag carrier of the island nation is majority owned by the Mauritian government. It operates flights to 22 destinations across four continents and has a fleet of 13 aircraft, including the A330neo and A350-900 and three ATR 72-500s.
