Air New Zealand and Cathay Pacific Extend Joint Venture for 5 More Years
Air New Zealand and Cathay Pacific have received approval from New Zealand regulators to extend their joint venture alliance for another five years. Originally established in 2013, the partnership has strengthened connectivity between New Zealand and Hong Kong, providing up to three daily flights during peak seasons and benefiting travelers heading to and from Asia.
“We’ve built a robust network that connects New Zealanders to destinations worldwide, including Hong Kong and mainland China, while making it easier for global travelers to reach New Zealand’s regions via Hong Kong,” said Michael Williams, Air New Zealand’s Chief Transformation and Alliances Officer.
Throughout the peak season, both airlines will offer 18 return flights per week between New Zealand and Hong Kong. This includes Cathay Pacific’s seasonal service, with four weekly flights from Christchurch to Hong Kong operating from October 30 through March 29, 2025.
According to OAG Schedules Analyser data, November 2024 will see around 36,000 two-way nonstop seats available between New Zealand and Hong Kong, marking a recovery to 88% of pre-pandemic capacity. Cathay Pacific currently holds a 52% capacity share on this route, while Air New Zealand holds 48%, providing balanced and competitive options for travelers.
