Air Wisconsin Wins First Essential Air Service Deal

Air Wisconsin Airlines has secured its first Essential Air Service (EAS) contract, marking a new chapter for the regional carrier after ending its long-standing partnership with American Airlines earlier this year. The agreement represents a significant milestone as the airline works to rebuild its network and presence in the U.S. regional market.
Founded in 1965 in Appleton, Wisconsin, Air Wisconsin has a long history of adapting to changing market conditions and airline partnerships. Over the decades, it has transitioned from being owned by local shareholders to becoming a publicly traded company, and later shifted between major airline alliances, including United Airlines and American Airlines.
Today, the airline operates as a subsidiary of Harbor Diversified, continuing to provide vital regional connectivity. Securing an EAS contract ensures Air Wisconsin will maintain operations in underserved communities that rely heavily on regional air links for both business and leisure travel. The program, managed by the U.S. Department of Transportation, subsidizes airlines to serve smaller airports that would otherwise lack commercial service.
This first EAS win is seen as an opportunity for Air Wisconsin to stabilize its operations following its exit from the American Airlines partnership in April 2025. It also positions the carrier for potential growth as regional airlines increasingly play a critical role in connecting smaller cities to the broader U.S. aviation network.
