AirAsia Debuts Kota Kinabalu-Ho Chi Minh Route
AirAsia has enhanced its presence in Southeast Asia by introducing a new direct service connecting Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) in Malaysia to Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The inaugural flight took off at 11:45 local time on December 3, 2024, arriving in Ho Chi Minh City at 12:55 local time with a remarkable passenger load factor of 96%. This strong initial response underscores the pent-up demand for convenient regional travel options and highlights the significance of this new route for both leisure and business travelers.
This addition to AirAsia’s portfolio marks the 16th international flight operated by the airline’s Malaysian division from Kota Kinabalu. By expanding its network in Vietnam, AirAsia is making a strategic move to serve a broader range of customers, as well as to provide seamless connectivity for travelers who seek new destinations within ASEAN countries. The carrier’s focus on strengthening ties between Malaysia and Vietnam aligns with both countries’ ambitious tourism targets.
Malaysia aims to welcome 27.3 million international visitors in 2024 as part of its broader tourism agenda and in preparation for Visit Malaysia Year 2026. The introduction of this new direct route from Kota Kinabalu to Ho Chi Minh City supports these objectives by making it easier for travelers—especially those coming from the northern region of Borneo—to access vibrant Vietnamese destinations. At the same time, it paves the way for Malaysians to explore Ho Chi Minh City’s rich cultural heritage, bustling markets, and modern attractions.
Vietnam, too, stands to benefit considerably. The country is targeting 17-18 million international arrivals in 2024, and this new AirAsia route will provide an additional pipeline of visitors. As Vietnam enters its peak tourism season during the last quarter of the year, access to diverse visitor markets is essential. Moreover, the country has its sights set on developing its Halal tourism segment, tapping into a global Halal food market projected to reach $4.5 trillion by 2030. Strengthening connections with Muslim-majority nations like Malaysia can help Vietnam establish credibility in Halal certification and bolster its offerings to attract more Muslim travelers.
