AirAsia Flight Returns Safely Over Engine Issue

An AirAsia flight bound for Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport encountered an unexpected engine issue and was forced to return safely to Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Flight AK128 departed Kuala Lumpur at approximately 21:59 local time on March 26, 2025, with 171 passengers and crew on board. About two hours into the flight, an abnormal indication was detected in one of the engines, prompting the flight crew to follow established safety protocols and request a priority landing back at Kuala Lumpur. The incident, which could have raised concerns among passengers, was handled swiftly and efficiently, ensuring that the aircraft landed safely with no reported injuries.
Upon inspection after the aircraft’s return, AirAsia confirmed that the abnormal engine indication was due to a damaged duct, which led to the release of hot air. The airline clarified that there was no engine fire, as some media reports had speculated, and that the situation was managed in accordance with all safety and operational procedures. In a detailed statement, Datuk Captain Chester Voo, Deputy Group CEO (Airline Operations) of AirAsia Aviation Group, explained that the flight crew’s prompt response and adherence to established protocols were instrumental in ensuring the safe return of the aircraft. He emphasized that the crew’s training and the airline’s commitment to safety are paramount, and thanked both Malaysia Airports and the Airport Fire and Rescue Service for their timely support during the incident.
The decision to return to Kuala Lumpur allowed the aircraft to undergo necessary rectification procedures, and AirAsia has stated that the plane is expected to return to service by March 31, 2025. In the meantime, to minimize disruption for passengers, the airline arranged for an alternate flight. Passengers and crew from flight AK128 were transferred to another aircraft, which departed Kuala Lumpur at 03:46 local time on March 27, 2025. This replacement flight then continued to Shenzhen, arriving at Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport at 07:51 local time. This seamless rebooking process underscored the airline’s commitment to customer service, ensuring that all affected passengers reached their destination with minimal inconvenience.
