AirAsia Launches Kuala Lumpur to Darwin Flights

AirAsia Malaysia has launched its new route connecting Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) to Darwin Airport (DRW), marking its return to the Northern Territory with the inaugural flight landing on June 27, 2025. Flight AK612 departed Kuala Lumpur at 05:50 local time and touched down in Darwin at 12:41 after a journey of five hours and 21 minutes aboard an Airbus A320neo. The flight had a strong start with an almost 90% passenger load.
This new service will operate four times a week and represents the first direct connection between the two cities by a Malaysian carrier since Malaysia Airlines last operated the route in 2018. AirAsia Malaysia is now the sole Malaysian airline flying the Kuala Lumpur-Darwin sector.
The launch is the result of close collaboration between AirAsia Malaysia, the Airport Development Group (ADG), and the Northern Territory Government, supported by the Tourism Aviation Attraction Scheme (TAAS). The route is expected to bolster tourism, trade, and connectivity between Australia and Southeast Asia.
AirAsia Malaysia CEO Dato’ Captain Fareh Mazputra highlighted Australia as one of the Group’s key growth markets and said the new service will provide not only direct and affordable access to Kuala Lumpur but also serve as a hub to over 130 destinations in the AirAsia network.
Robyn Cahill, Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations, noted that the new route will boost the Northern Territory’s aviation sector and enhance travel options for both leisure and business travelers.
