airBaltic Expands A220 Fleet with Order for 10 Additional Aircraft, Bringing Total to 90
airBaltic has placed a new order for an additional 10 Airbus A220-300 aircraft, raising the airline’s total firm order to 90 A220s. This fourth reorder solidifies airBaltic’s position as the largest A220 customer in Europe and the world’s leading operator of the A220-300.
The Latvian national carrier, which has been operating the A220-300 since 2016 as its launch customer, transitioned to an exclusive A220 fleet in 2020. With this latest order, airBaltic continues to strengthen its commitment to the A220, further enhancing its fleet capabilities and supporting its growth strategy.
Martin Gauss, President and CEO of airBaltic, stated, “For the first time in our company’s history, airBaltic is on track to operate a fleet of nearly 100 A220-300 aircraft. These additional orders mark another significant step in our journey. The A220 has consistently proven its operational efficiency and has become the backbone of our operations. It plays a crucial role in our international success, and by expanding our fleet, we reaffirm our trust in the A220 program.”
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Executive Vice President of Sales at Airbus Commercial Aircraft, commented, “We are honored and grateful that airBaltic has placed its fourth follow-up order for the A220. This latest agreement underscores the exceptional value and operational flexibility offered by this next-generation aircraft. The A220 is the most efficient aircraft in its category, providing unmatched passenger comfort and range capability, allowing airBaltic to serve its network and beyond.”
The Airbus A220-300, designed for short- to medium-haul flights, can accommodate between 120 to 150 passengers and fly up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km). It features the largest cabin, seats, and windows in its class, ensuring a superior passenger experience.
With advanced aerodynamics, cutting-edge materials, and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation GTF™ engines, the A220 delivers a 50% reduction in noise footprint compared to previous-generation aircraft and approximately 40% lower NOx emissions than industry standards. The aircraft also offers 25% lower fuel burn and CO2 emissions per seat. Additionally, the A220 is already capable of operating with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with Airbus aiming for 100% SAF compatibility by 2030.
As of the end of July, Airbus has secured more than 900 orders for the A220 from around 30 customers, with approximately 350 aircraft delivered to over 20 operators worldwide. The A220 is currently serving more than 1,400 routes globally, proving its versatility and efficiency across various markets.
