airBaltic Eyes Growth as Interim CEO Guides Transition

airBaltic is entering a new phase under interim CEO Pauls Cālītis, who stepped in following the departure of longtime leader Martin Gauss in April 2025. Gauss resigned after losing the Latvian government’s confidence, ending a 13-year tenure. Cālītis, formerly COO and a 30-year veteran of the airline, is tasked with ensuring continuity as the search for a permanent CEO continues. Over 40 applications have been received globally, with a decision expected within three months.

Cālītis is focusing on aligning the leadership team and strengthening internal and external communication as airBaltic gears up for the summer season. A key part of the airline’s current strategy is its agreement with Lufthansa, which includes leasing 19 Airbus A220-300s and could expand pending regulatory approval of Lufthansa’s 10% equity stake.

The airline’s IPO, originally planned for 2025, is paused due to market volatility and pending CEO selection. A launch remains possible by fall 2025 or in 2026.

airBaltic’s fleet of A220-300s is expected to grow from 50 to 55–57 aircraft by mid-2026, despite ongoing engine maintenance issues with Pratt & Whitney. The airline had to cancel over 4,600 flights for summer 2025 but is seeing signs of stabilization.

Cālītis envisions a 100-aircraft fleet within five years, with expanded ACMI operations beyond Europe. He also sees a deepening partnership with Lufthansa and more underserved markets entering the network, building airBaltic’s reputation as a flexible, high-quality regional operator.
