In a special ceremony held on February 4, 2025, in Mirabel, Canada, airBaltic and Airbus celebrated a significant milestone with the unveiling of the Latvian carrier’s 50th Airbus A220-300. As the launch customer for the A220-300 back in 2017, this moment held particular meaning for both companies, marking not only the completion of airBaltic’s initial order but also taking the airline a step closer to its goal of operating 100 A220-300 aircraft by 2030.

The new aircraft was presented in a stunning, custom-designed livery that had been chosen through a public competition launched by airBaltic in 2024. The design takes inspiration from the Latvian flag and features a girl soaring through the clouds, her long hair crowned with a traditional wreath. The livery also incorporates representative symbols of the three Baltic states—Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia—with creative elements like a ladybug, a swallow, and a stork artistically woven into the design.

Martin Gauss, President and CEO of airBaltic, reflected on the significance of the milestone: “More than eight years ago, we became the global launch operator of the Airbus A220-300, which has since become the backbone of our operations. This milestone aircraft represents the completion of our initial order and brings us halfway to our goal of doubling in size and operating a single-type fleet of 100 A220-300s by 2030.”

The livery design was chosen from over 840 entries submitted in a competition, with the final design selected after a public vote by the airline’s loyalty program members. The winning design was then refined by airBaltic to meet the aircraft’s technical specifications.

Benoît Schultz, CEO of Airbus Canada, praised the partnership: “As the first to have received an A220-300 eight years ago, airBaltic is one of our long-standing customers. We are pleased to celebrate the revealing of their 50th A220. We are honoured to continue being the partner of choice for airBaltic as they continue increasing their A220 fleet.”

The newly unveiled A220-300 is set to join airBaltic’s fleet in February 2025, further solidifying the airline’s commitment to expanding its modern, efficient fleet and continuing its leadership in the regional aircraft market. This aircraft, part of airBaltic’s ongoing fleet expansion, marks a key milestone in the airline’s growth trajectory as it moves towards its ambitious goal of 100 A220-300s by the end of the decade.
