Airbus, Amazon Forge Satellite Connectivity Partnership

At this year’s Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany, Airbus and Amazon signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding to deliver satellite inflight connectivity (IFC) for airline customers. The agreement is set to integrate Amazon’s Project Kuiper into Airbus’ fleet offerings, providing a state-of-the-art solution that will significantly enhance the passenger experience and optimize flight operations. Project Kuiper aims to establish a vast constellation of more than 3,200 low Earth orbit satellites, offering an internet service with downlink speeds of up to one gigabit per second. This high-speed connectivity is expected to bring a new level of performance to inflight communications, enabling airlines to deliver seamless browsing, high-definition streaming, and enhanced productivity onboard.

Under the terms of the MoU, Airbus customers will have the option to choose Project Kuiper’s connectivity service when selecting inflight entertainment and communication solutions. Airbus plans to incorporate the connectivity solution into its line-fit and retrofit aircraft catalogue managed by various service providers. The integration will become a key component of Airbus’ High Bandwidth Connectivity Plus (HBCplus) program, designed to help airlines meet the rapidly growing expectations of today’s tech-savvy passengers. By offering a choice of connectivity solutions, Airbus is positioning itself to address the competitive demands of modern commercial aviation, where reliable and high-speed internet is no longer a luxury but an essential amenity.

Chris Weber, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Project Kuiper, stated that providing inflight connectivity comparable to ground speeds is a complex challenge well-suited for the innovative capabilities of Amazon’s satellite network. He added that the partnership builds on the strong relationship between Airbus and Amazon, promising to enable more airlines to offer richer onboard experiences and access vital flight operations information. The solution is expected to be seamlessly integrated into a wide range of Airbus aircraft, allowing carriers to upgrade their existing fleets or install connectivity in new models with ease.

Tim Sommer, Airbus’ Vice President and Head of Connected Aircraft Program, expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration. He highlighted that by partnering with Project Kuiper, Airbus is providing airlines with an additional option to address the growing demand for fast, low-latency, and reliable inflight connectivity across global routes. Sommer explained that the advanced connectivity solution will not only improve passenger satisfaction but also empower airlines to optimize their operational performance, keeping them at the forefront of the transformation taking place in the aviation industry.

Project Kuiper is set to launch its first full batch of satellites on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on April 9, 2025. As part of the initial deployment, Amazon plans to send 27 satellites to an altitude of 280 miles, or 450 kilometers, above Earth. Rajeev Badyal, Vice President of Project Kuiper, noted that the company has designed some of the most advanced communications satellites ever built, and every launch contributes to expanding the network’s capacity and coverage. With 80 launches already secured from partners including Arianespace, Blue Origin, SpaceX, and United Launch Alliance, Project Kuiper is well on its way to achieving its ambitious goals.

This strategic partnership between Airbus and Amazon signifies a major step forward in the evolution of inflight connectivity. By leveraging cutting-edge satellite technology, the collaboration is set to redefine the passenger experience and provide airlines with the tools needed to excel in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
