Airbus Considers Selling Stake in Brazilian Helicopter Subsidiary Helibras to Strategic Partner
Airbus, the prominent European aerospace company, has expressed openness to the idea of selling a portion of its Brazilian helicopter subsidiary, Helibras, to a potential strategic partner. Helibras stands as the sole helicopter manufacturer in the Southern Hemisphere and holds a prominent market position within Brazil.
Alberto Duek, the president of Helibras, revealed in a statement to Reuters that in January, Airbus acquired the remaining 15.5% stake in Helibras from the state of Minas Gerais for $19.4 million, thereby becoming the sole owner of the company. Duek clarified that this acquisition was not Airbus Helicopters’ initial plan; rather, it was prompted by Minas Gerais’ privatization goals, which necessitated the state to seek a buyer for its stake.
Despite having established a favorable partnership with Minas Gerais, Airbus felt compelled to secure the stake to prevent potential disruptions from external entities. Duek asserted that Airbus would be open to selling these shares to a dependable partner who aligns with their compliance principles, market reputation, and contributions to Helibras’ operations.
While Duek did not explicitly indicate that Airbus is actively seeking a strategic partner, he confirmed that the company would assess any offers that emerge at the appropriate time.
Helibras, which achieved record helicopter sales of 50 units in 2022, is set to participate in the upcoming LABACE airshow in Sao Paulo. Despite this achievement, the company faces challenges due to ongoing supply chain constraints resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Duek anticipates that it may take another year and a half to two years before the situation normalizes.
Duek acknowledged that the helicopter market experienced a slowdown in the first half of 2023 following a strong performance in the previous year. However, it has been gradually regaining momentum, and he expects a positive second half. Helibras serves both private and public sector clients and has been investing in exports, accounting for 20% of its production. The company boasts customers in various countries including Chile, Ecuador, Argentina, and Bolivia.
