Airbus Opens Second Jet Assembly Line in China to Boost A320neo Production

Airbus has officially opened its second aircraft assembly line in China, expanding its global manufacturing footprint and boosting production capacity for its best-selling A320neo family of single-aisle jets. The new facility, located in the port city of Tianjin near Beijing, marks the European planemaker’s 10th final assembly line worldwide and is expected to be fully operational by early 2026.
The inauguration comes shortly after Airbus opened another assembly line in Mobile, Alabama, underscoring the company’s dual strategy of balancing its industrial growth between key global markets amid increasing trade tensions.
Ahead of the Tianjin opening, Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury met with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, who emphasized the growing risks posed by global economic fragmentation and protectionist policies. According to China’s Ministry of Commerce, Wang highlighted the importance of maintaining stability in international trade, while Airbus reaffirmed its commitment to deepening partnerships with China, as well as strengthening China–France and China–Europe trade ties.
The expansion in Tianjin reflects Airbus’s long-term investment in the Chinese aviation market, which is expected to become the world’s largest by the mid-2030s. The site builds upon the success of Airbus’s first Chinese final assembly line, which began operations in 2008 and has since delivered hundreds of A320 family aircraft to airlines across Asia.
Industry analysts noted that the back-to-back openings in Tianjin and Mobile were deliberately timed to avoid geopolitical friction amid the ongoing trade tensions between China and the United States. Airbus, which continues to outperform rival Boeing in global narrowbody sales, is seeking to increase production to meet record order backlogs from airlines worldwide.
The new Tianjin line will play a key role in Airbus’s plan to ramp up monthly A320neo production to 75 aircraft by 2026, helping the manufacturer meet surging demand while diversifying its supply chain across multiple continents.
