Airbus has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Thai Airways (THAI) to retrofit the airline’s fleet of A350-900 aircraft, marking a significant step in enhancing the airline’s long-haul service. The agreement was officially announced on April 9, 2025, during a signing ceremony at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany.

Under the terms of the agreement, Airbus will oversee a comprehensive retrofit program aimed at upgrading the aircraft’s cabin to enhance passenger comfort and operational efficiency. The refurbishment will include a variety of state-of-the-art upgrades, with the airline’s A350-900s set to receive “modernized and elevated” Royal Silk business class seats, along with new premium economy and economy class seating.

Additionally, the retrofit will feature an upgraded in-flight entertainment system designed to offer passengers an improved and more enjoyable travel experience. The cabin modernization is scheduled to begin in 2028, with retrofitted aircraft being reintroduced to service in phases, ensuring minimal disruption to Thai Airways’ flight operations.

Balinda Zhang, Airbus Head of Commercial Services for Asia Pacific, expressed the company’s enthusiasm for supporting Thai Airways in this significant fleet investment. “Airbus is pleased to support THAI in this significant investment in their fleet, ensuring that their A350 aircraft continue to offer passengers an exceptional flying experience,” Zhang said. She added that the retrofit is aligned with the shared vision of delivering enhanced comfort, efficiency, and sustainability for airlines and their customers.

The agreement also reaffirms Airbus’s long-standing partnership with Thai Airways and demonstrates the company’s commitment to supporting the airline’s fleet modernization strategy. Currently, Thai Airways operates a fleet of 23 A350-900 aircraft, though one is registered as inactive, according to ch-aviation.

This retrofit initiative underscores the importance of maintaining a competitive edge in passenger comfort and operational performance, ensuring that Thai Airways continues to provide high-quality service on its international routes.
