Airbus Defence and Space head Michael Schoellhorn said on Sunday that Airbus, Thales and Leonardo could sign their first agreement this year to combine parts of their satellite operations, confirming earlier reports about a potential European aerospace tie-up.

The three groups are exploring ways to integrate their satellite businesses to enhance competitiveness against US and Chinese rivals, which are benefiting from strong government support and aggressive private-sector investment. While discussions are still ongoing, Schoellhorn noted that the goal is to reach an initial accord by the end of 2024, laying the groundwork for a larger partnership.

The potential deal would align Airbus’ extensive satellite manufacturing capabilities with Thales Alenia Space’s communications expertise and Leonardo’s advanced sensor and electronics systems. Analysts say a unified European satellite entity could streamline production, cut costs and accelerate innovation in key areas such as secure communications, earth observation and space exploration.

European governments have long encouraged closer industrial cooperation in space to strengthen the region’s autonomy and market share. A combined Airbus-Thales-Leonardo venture would echo similar consolidation efforts in defense and aviation, positioning Europe more strongly in the rapidly expanding commercial and government satellite markets.

Schoellhorn emphasized that the talks are focused on building a partnership model that respects each company’s strengths while boosting collective competitiveness. If signed, the initial deal would mark a major step toward creating a European satellite powerhouse capable of challenging global leaders and supporting EU space policy goals.
